How to Play Dominoes

Dominoes, also known as bones, cards, men, pieces or tiles, are a type of game played on a table by two or more players. The game is a variation of the block or draw games, in which players begin with a number of dominoes and take turns placing them on the table in such a way that they form an increasing snake-like chain.

There are different types of dominoes, depending on their size, shape and design. Some are longer than others and some are narrower than others, but the standard rule is that they are twice as long as they are wide. Each tile, or piece, features a line in the center to divide it into two squares. Each of these squares is marked with an arrangement of spots, or pips, similar to those used on dice.

The number of pips on each end of a tile is referred to as its rank, and the higher the number, the heavier the tile. For example, a domino with six pips on each side is called a “double” or double-six; a tile with three pips on each side is a “double-three”.

While the origin of dominoes is not known, it has been suggested that they were first made in China. They were originally a type of game that represented one of the 21 results of throwing two six-sided dice. They were brought to England in the 18th century and were popular for playing positional games, where each player placed a domino edge-to-edge against another in such a way that the adjacent faces were either identical or formed some specified total.

Playing a domino requires a bit of skill and wit. You have to know the rules of the game and how many dominoes you need to complete your set. If you are not sure what to do, consult a friend or someone else who has played before.

When you are ready to begin, you draw seven dominoes for your hand and place them face down on the table in front of you. The rest of the dominoes are called your boneyard, and can be drawn at any time.

Once all the dominoes are drawn, the player who drew the highest double or highest domino starts by placing a tile on the table. This tile, which is typically the double-six, is usually the first tile to be played. If no one has the double-six, a player takes the next tile on the board and so on until all of the dominoes have been played.
